“Elite female ski jumpers return to competition
VANCOUVER — It has certainly been an interesting week for Ski Jumping Canada.
First off, the two Whistler Olympic Park jumps, dormant since they hosted the 2010 Games, are finally back in business and will host the 2012 Canadian ski jumping and nordic combined championships on Saturday. And now Canada’s national team is drawing interest from some of the talented women jumpers who’d left the program after the 2009-10 season in the wake of the sport’s failure to be included in those 2010 Games. Calgary’s Nata de Leeuw will compete this weekend. She hasn’t jumped since she served as a forerunner for the men’s event at the Olympics. Calgary’s Atsuko Tanaka, a Canadian who has been competing for Japan the last two seasons, is also returning to the Canadian team.De Leeuw, 21, isn’t making any promises about a full comeback.
